What is SIP? Session Initiation Protocol is a signaling protocol used for establishing sessions in an IP network. (A way to make phone calls and much more, over the internet.) Why would I want SIP? Having a SIP enabled business telephone system at your corporate office provides the ability for small branch office, home based, and traveling employees to have a "hard" or a "soft" phone that works just like they are in the corporate office. A soft phone adds features like Video and Instant Messaging!
Internet SIP providers can provide a SIP address that can be an actual telephone number from almost anywhere within the U.S. In effect an Indiana company could have a Texas phone number for very little $'s per month. Be ready for the SIP protocol to act like the "mail to" protocol--your email address could become your private telephone number. How can I get SIP? Purchase a business telephone system that is SIP enabled or sign up with an internet SIP provider. Use SIP for its features, continue to use regular services and in place cable by purchasing the Comdial® MP5000 hybrid system which provides the ability to leverage digital proprietary, analog, and IP SIP for each of their unique advantages.
